Greening Nipissing, in partnership with the North Bay and District Humane Society, is building a Rain Garden to divert stormwater run- off on Main St West.

The project site is located at the North Bay and District Humane Society, 2060 Main Street West, North Bay. “Greening Nipissing is grateful to acknowledge and announce grant funding support for this project from the RBC Blue Water Community Action Grant 2016 for $5,000” said Carrie Silvestri-Audette. This project is also supported by the City of North Bay.

The goal of the rain garden project is to install a public demonstration garden to provide public education for individuals in North Bay to learn about stormwater reduction techniques that can be used on public and private lands. The importance of a rain garden, especially those that are adjacent to driveways, sidewalks, rooves and parking lots is to protect fresh water by filtering out the contaminants that have accumulated in stormwater such as salts, heavy metals and hydrocarbons. Rain gardens are self-sustaining and, once built, can be maintained with minimal effort.

Rain gardens not only serve an environmental purpose but also contribute to the beautification of communities and provide habitat for bees and butterflies. “Rain gardens are inexpensive and simple to build. They are an environmentally sound solution to urban stormwater runoff with the added benefit of beautifying city streets and neighbourhoods. Rain gardens help to reduce the amount of runoff and pollution entering storm sewers, improving the quality of water entering local waterbodies. And they can help reduce standing water and the potential for home flooding.” Alix Taylor, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Green Communities Canada Greening Nipissing is a not-for-profit organization and registered charity with Canada Revenue Agency and is a member of Green Communities Canada.
