You'll have to drive a couple of hours north, but if you have a skill driving spikes in railway ties, this might be the contest for you.
Ontario Northland is inviting everyone to celebrate the rich history of the railway in Northeastern Ontario by participating in a recreational spike driving competition on Saturday, June 11th at noon at the Englehart Station.
The event will be the first of its kind hosted by Ontario Northland.
“Driving a spike into a railway tie takes a lot of skill, strength and precision,” says John Thib, Vice President of Rail. “This event is a way for us to celebrate our employees’ railroading abilities and provides an opportunity to network with the community and former railroaders..”
Today maintenance crews use specialized equipment and technology to install track. –However, the traditional method of driving a spike by hand using a track hammer is still part of the job and a unique skill for many railroaders.
The free spike driving event begins at 12 pm on Saturday, June 11th on the grounds of the Englehart Station.
Register to compete, or come cheer on the spike drivers. Top prize for the professional division is $500 and top prize for amateur division is $100. There will be food available and activities for kids.
