Ontario is transitioning to an online, electronic Mining Lands Administration System (MLAS), replacing the province’s century-old traditional ground-staking methods and completing multi-phased efforts to modernize the Mining Act.

The new online self-service system will allow anyone with a prospector's licence to register a claim — seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

In addition to simplifying the process, the new system will also improve how mining claims are registered, enhance the province’s competitiveness in the mining industry and help drive more international investment into our world-class mineral exploration and development sector.

Ontario currently has 38 active mines and approximately 150 companies actively exploring more than 200 projects.

It accounts for over 25 per cent of mining jobs in Canada, with the mining industry creating more than 26,000 direct and 50,000 indirect jobs in the province.
