On Saturday, November 28th, 11 FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams from North Bay and area will gather at Widdifield Secondary School to compete for a chance to participate in the provincial FLL Championship in February.

The tournament will host one veteran FLL team, and 10 brand new rookie teams created this year.  Teams include Whitewoods Public School, Chippewa Intermediate Public School, EW Norman Public School, King George Public School, Fricker Public School, Ferris Glen Public School, Sunset Park Public School, MT Davidson Public School, Land of Lakes Public School.

The 1st Annual North Bay FLL Tournament is sponsored by Team 1305 ICE CUBED who participates in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).  Many 1305 students are mentoring the FLL students and their teams.

The theme of this year’s FLL challenge is ‘Trash Trek”.  Area FLL teams, composed of up to 10 students (within grades 4-8) are tasked with building a robot out of LEGO and LEGO Mindstorms that will autonomously run ‘missions’ on the competition table, a 4’ x 8’ table with markings and game pieces.  Teams learn more about some of the challenges of trash and trash management.  Scenarios include composting, methane plant, recycling and reusing.

Teams also research trash management and create a project and presentation to show how they might manage trash, or change how trash is produced.  A panel of judges rates the team on numerous criteria and provides members with feedback.

The competition is FREE and open to the public.  Opening ceremonies take place at 9am, followed by a full day of table-top robotics matches and project presentations and judging.  Awards should be complete by 4:30.

The event is open to the public from 9 am-3 pm and the robots will be playing from 10:30 AM- 12 PM then 12 PM-2:30PM.

There is also a fun Lego Brick "walk of fire" activity !
