CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN AT SITE OF NEW EMS STATION

North Bay, ON – Construction of a new Emergency Medical Services station is set to begin at 1715 Seymour Street, just off the Highway 17 bypass.  Local dignitaries were at the site today to mark the beginning of a year-long process that will see one new building erected to take the place of two currently being used by District paramedics.

“It’s been determined that one new ambulance station is the best way to accomplish three things: to serve citizens by providing them with the fastest and safest emergency health care possible, to use a central location that allows easy access to all parts of the service area via the bypass, and also considers the health and safety of EMS personnel,” says Mark King, Chair of the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB).

The existing building on Beatty Street is 40 years old and no longer meets acceptable standards. The current station is too small and there are issues regarding occupational safety, the deteriorating condition of the buildings, and it’s location in a residential area.  An extensive assessment conducted two years ago found that bringing the existing facilities up to standards would be very expensive, and would not resolve some of the issues.  In the new plan, it was determined it would be more efficient and cost effective to operate the two current stations (890 Beatty Street and 35 Ferris Drive) out of one central location that can best serve the entire district, with a new building constructed to meet current and future needs. The DNSSAB has entered into a long-term lease agreement (15-years) with the landlord (PRONOR).

The new station in North Bay will serve a response coverage area which is halfway to Mattawa, half way to West Nipissing, Temagami and Callander.
