NDP MP Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) issued the following statement after this weekend’s CN train derailment near Gogama:

“In less than a month the people of Gogama and Mattagami First Nations have witnessed two derailments of CN trains carrying crude oil.

“We are incredibly grateful that no one has been hurt, however we are deeply angered by the events and concerned about the impacts they are having on their communities and the environment.

“Saturday’s derailment sent rail cars into the river which immediately affected air and water quality. Of great concern is the lasting impact these derailments will have on Gogama and the Mattagami First Nations whose livelihood depends on the health of the Mattagami River eco-system and surrounding environment.

“After the derailment last month, the Minister told Canadians that rail safety was a priority; however Northern Ontarians have failed to see that in practice. 

“The frequency of these accidents is alarming, and Northern Ontarians deserve answers. It’s time the Conservatives make improving rail safety a real priority.”
