Mystery shopper scam arrest

On June 30, 2016 West Parry Sound OPP responded to a complaint of a mystery shopper scam in Parry Sound.

"The victim answered an ad and received a $2,980 dollar cheque to be deposited into her account," says  Constable Miles Loach. "She was then instructed to deposit the money into another account and retain $500 as payment. Twelve days later her bank account was frozen because the cheque she had deposited was counterfeit."

On March 21, 2018 that mystery shopper scam investigation that was initiated almost two years ago came to a conclusion with Hamilton Police arresting Joshua Godwin, 39 from Hamilton on an OPP warrant.

Godwin has been charged with:

  • Fraud under $5,000 and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 

Godwin was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound, Ontario on April 5, 2018.
