(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Canadore College, Yes Employment Services and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) hosted a Canada-Ontario Job Grant information luncheon yesterday.

In March 2014, Ontario signed the Canada-Ontario Job Fund agreement with the federal government which outlined funding opportunities for new employer-driven training initiatives. This government funding aims to help Ontarians acquire the skills required to fill job vacancies and succeed in the workplace.

“This is an unprecedented opportunity for employers,” said Shawn Chorney, Vice-President of Enrolment Management. “It is widely recognized that the workforce needs to upskill, but there is rarely money to achieve this goal. With the jobs grant, employees can be subsidized to attend Canadore where quality training can be uniquely customized to meet the demands and future plans of a particular company.”

According to the Conference Board of Canada, Ontario’s skills shortages cost the economy up to $24.3 billion in forgone gross domestic product (GDP) and $3.7 billion in provincial tax revenues annually. According to many provincial employers, they don’t have the people they need to grow their business.

“At Nordic Minesteel Technologies training and safety are priorities,” said Derek Brown, Vice-President of Operations at NMT. “We want our team to have the most current and innovative skills possible. Education and improvements are continuous and certificates must be the highest industry standards. The Canada-Ontario job grant will allow us to fulfill both mandatory training and to upgrade our employees, allowing our company to grow in both reputation and size.”

Approximately 25 area employers attended the luncheon at Canadore College.
