Mental Illness Awareness Week is Oct. 1-7 and provides the opportunity to spread awareness, end stigma, speak openly about mental health, and call for increased access to mental health services.

“Mental illnesses can be treated effectively but we first need to change our attitudes so we can treat our mental health like our physical health,” said CMHA Nipissing’s Executive Director, Jenny Leblond. “By taking those extra steps to raise awareness and overcome stigma and discrimination, we will then be able to feel comfortable reaching out and asking for help.”

MIAW is an annual national public education campaign coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health in cooperation with all its member organizations, including CMHA.

Mental illness, directly and indirectly, affects more than six million people across the country.

You can join the conversation online and share your story to combat stigma using the hashtag #MIAW18.
