Here's a wacky ending to this story.

After fleeing on foot, the man stole a canoe and paddled to Bracebridge where he was found by police and arrested.

OPP have charged James Rye, 52, of Huntsville with:

  • Possession of Stolen Property,
  • Breach of Probation,
  • Theft and
  • Break and Enter

Original story:

A crash on Highway 11 near Bracebridge this morning has OPP officers scratching their heads.

They were called to investigate a collision on the southbound lanes of Highway 11 south of Cedar Lane, shortly after 8 a.m.

A pickup truck towing three snowmobiles had crashed into the ditch and hit a tree.

For some reason, the male driver fled the area on foot.

Bracebridge officers were assisted by OPP Canine Unit and Central Region Emergency Response Team in searching the area but were not able to locate the man.

Police continue to investigate the collision and are trying to identify the suspect.
