Local students get to experience an old time drive-in theatre

Built in 1952, the Muskoka Drive-In is unique, as the cement screen was built on top of Canadian Shield rock and is one of the oldest Canadian Drive-Theatres still operating

Students at Mother St Bride and École Catholique Sainte-Anges in North Bay will be experiencing what it's like to go to a drive-in movie.

The Muskoka Drive-In Theatre located in Gravenhurst just donated over $15,000 worth of passes to area schools. The Drive-In made an announcement to help schools show appreciation to volunteers, award excellence or to help them raise money for projects within their own school.

Forty-Two schools plus various organizations made requests for passes from the Drive-In. Schools from North Bay in the north, Orillia in the south, Parry Sound to the west and Haliburton in the east all received passes.

William Alexander, owner of the Muskoka Drive-In said, “From the wide area of the school requests, it seems that we are not only Muskoka's Drive-In but Northern Ontario's as well!"

Through the years the Muskoka Drive-In has helped various charities and organizations such as the Rotary Club, Ronald McDonald House, the Muskoka Scouts, The Army Cadets, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life to name a few.

"We have also fulfilled many requests to donated passes to family fundraisers as well. The Muskoka Drive-In even presented the CBC’s broadcast of the Tragically Hip’s last concert on the drive- in screen that allowed many people to share in this unique event and raised over $6,000 for Brain Cancer research.

Built in 1952, the Muskoka Drive-In is unique, as the cement screen was built on top of Canadian Shield rock and is one of the oldest Canadian Drive-Theatres still operating. It is the last of many Northern Ontario drive-ins that used to populate areas such as North Bay (Trout Lake Road) Sault Ste Marie, Sudbury, New Liskeard, Huntsville, and Orillia.

“This 66 years old Drive In has always been a part of the community and we will continue to help when asked even if those requests are outside of Muskoka.” adds owner Alexander

The Muskoka Drive In will open for its 66th season April 13th.
