Lon Molnar, born and raised in North Bay won an award for Best Visual effects at the Canadian Screen Awards this month.

The awards are given annually by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television recognizing excellence in Canadian film, English-language television, and digital media productions.

You may recognize them as the former Gemini Awards and Genie Awards that were merged back in 2013.

Molnar is a graduate of Canadore College's Graphic Communications program back in 1990.

He presently is the CEO, Intelligent Creatures, Visual Effects for Feature Film in Toronto.

Molnar explained to BayToday what went through his mind when his named was called.

"I brought my young daughter with me as my 'date', so the first was who’s going to look after her while I go up on stage. Next was 'finally!'(we’ve lost in previous years) 'we are recognized for our efforts'.  Then you are urged to speed things up.  We had to get on the stage quickly so all you’re thinking about is trying to bring order to the chaotic feelings.

"We were nominated for both "Hyena Road" and Atom Egoyan’s “Remember” in the same category, and for the BBC America series “Orphan Black” on the Wednesday of the CSA week.  To be given three nominations is such a great honour.  I have worked in this field since 1997 and there have been many sleepless nights slugging away either in a dark room on a computer, or out on location in the craziest locations on this planet.  All of that work, all of the time away from family, the ups and downs of the industry - a roller coaster ride of an industry - came together as memories that very moment.  A smile came across my face, a sigh of relief.  A moment where I can humbly say with confidence, we… I... deserved it."

Lon began his career in graphic design says his LinkedIn site, "but then caught a particularly virulent strain of a well-known bug—a passion for making pictures move. After cutting his teeth in computer animation at the Vancouver Film School, Lon worked on a dizzying array of projects across North America, developing a profound expertise in animation and visual effects. Commercials, MOWs, television series and feature films have all fed his inexhaustible appetite for professional growth and achievement.

Over the last decade he has been blazing a path of creative contributions on high profile Features Films such as Battle: LA (2011), Watchmen (2009), Babel (2006), and Mr & Mrs Smith (2005)

Today, Lon is a leader in Toronto's Visual Effects community with a reputation for achieving film excellence by working with creative people, especially filmmakers, who share the same passion for detail and design.
