Local author Nicky Poulin has put her artistic talents to great use by writing and illustrating a children's book. The goal is to raise money for the Near North Palliate Care Network.

"Nicky Poulin is bringing us all a gift of grace from her heart. Nicky has not only donated her time, energy, and love to conceive, compose and illustrate the book Wise Tails but she has also donated an additional three thousand dollars this Christmas to the Near North Palliative Care Network locally, as a gift from her family to yours," explains a news release.

As Poulin says, “Supporting the Community is the Ohana Way.”

Nicky Poulin and Darren Renaud were the founders and owners of the Ohana Yoga and Wellness Centre in Callander providing Yoga and Wellness to everybody.

"They worked in our community and abroad providing outreach over the past 23 years," according to the release.

In May of this year, Darren Renaud tragically passed away and through this Nicky continued to spearhead the publishing of their book “Wise Tails,” a series of inspirational short stories about love and compassion.

"This book is written by many wonderful authors including Darren and Nicky and the executive director of NNPCN, Monica.

“Wise Tails” is a fun-loving book filled with life lessons that can be shared with readers of all ages.

"Nicky beautifully illustrated each story with artful characters, bringing out the inner child in us," adds Monica Do Coutto Monni of the Network. "She has generously donated her time and energy to NNPCN, so that we can give you a lower price for the book during this Holiday season."

Nicky told the Board that she really would like to do something this Christmas in honour of her husband Darren who was the past Chair of the NNPCN Board.

She is encouraging everyone to purchase a copy of Wise Tails book or give a donation this Christmas and a full donation receipt will be provided

Each year, the Near North Palliate Care Network. has grown with its free services to the community, including Visiting Hospice Palliative Care, Caregivers’ respite, Grief counselling, combat to social isolation among our seniors, and training services. In 2015, the services provided care to 500 people and during the Covid-19 pandemic these numbers have soared to 5,000 per year and growing says the release.

NNPCN is the Visiting Hospice of Nipissing and East Parry Sound districts. Their services are free of charge and have been there to help so many in need for the last 34 years, since 1987. NNPCN staff and volunteers are professionally trained to ensure that each member of our community dealing with end of life, loss and grief can receive help.

All palliative care clients are helped immediately. Due to the great demand for grief support services, there may be a waiting list at times to be paired up with a grief facilitator.

"It is not easy to imagine what is the role of a Visiting Hospice such as NNPCN, unless you have needed their services at some point in your life," said Do Coutto Monni. "Maybe you are caring for a loved one at the end of life, or aging completely by yourself and feeling profoundly isolated, suffered trauma, or lost someone you loved, and have never had the opportunity to grieve properly, find support, or be listened to with unconditional understanding. NNPCN offers these much-needed support services, to get you through your loss, grief, and trauma. After all, life is a journey, and we all walk together. So, wouldn’t it be nice to give back…?"

The Wise Tails book is now available at $15 per copy, or $10  each if you purchase five plus copies - and a donation receipt in full will be sent to you. Copies can be picked up at the Ohana Yoga & Wellness Centre in Callander or at the NNPCN. If you wish to have them delivered to you an additional $7 is asked for handling and shipping.  If you wish to make an additional donation to NNPCN to the “Wise Tails” donation fund in honour of a loved one you will also receive a deductible income tax receipt for your donation.
