Northern Ontario forests offer an abundance of wild edibles – if you know where to look and what to look for!

Local forager and naturalist Lucy Emmott will guide the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority’s annual hike at the Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area Friday, July 27.

“As our guest guide, Lucy brings a deep appreciation for and understanding of the natural environment and how people can develop their own appreciation for what nature provides in the wild,” said Sue Buckle, Manager of Communications and Outreach.

The 400 acre Eau Claire Gorge Conservation Area is rich with natural heritage says a news release. The highlight of the 1.9 km trail is the spectacular Amable du Fond River waterfall which drops 12 m (40ft) with 18m high (60ft) high walls of the Gorge.

“The area is steeped in natural and human history.  The conservation area preserves the distinctive natural and historic features that were key to the NBMCA’s decision to purchase the land in 1976 to preserve and protect this treasure,” said Buckle.

The hike begins at 9:30 am.

A bus will be available from North Bay at 8:15 am from New Ontario Brewery, 1881 Cassells Street. Call NBMCA at 705 474-5420 to reserve a seat.

The bus and hike are free; however, donations to the NBMCA outreach program are appreciated.  The hike is sponsored by Pattison Outdoor Advertising.
