Impaired e-bike rider runs off the road

Is it just us or are we seeing more of these?

On September 14, shortly after 6 p.m., an OPP officer responded to a call that an e-bike ran off the road on Highway 612 in Seguin Township. Police found the bike and determined that the driver had consumed alcohol.  

As a result of the investigation Kevin Riva, 48, from Georgian Bay Township, was arrested and charged with:

  • Drive motor vehicle - over 80 mgs. of blood alcohol, 
  • Drive motor vehicle while ability impaired - alcohol, and
  • Drive while disqualified - court order.

Riva was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound, Ontario on October 4.

Impaired operation of an e-bike: 

  • Impaired by alcohol or drug and then driving a motor vehicle is a Criminal Code offence and charges are laid under the Criminal Code of Canada. Under the Criminal Code, the definition of a "motor vehicle" includes an e-bike, and anyone operating an e-bike intoxicated could be charged for impaired driving. If convicted, the offender would be subject to the Criminal Code penalties, including a fine or jail time, and a driving prohibition.
