(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Students from Canadore College’s Environmental programs spent the afternoon cleaning the pond’s shores at the Education Centre today.

Louise Vaillancourt, a recent graduate student from the Environmental Technician – Protection and Compliance program organized the event with second year student, Stephanie Jeffery.

“The environmental students have been organizing this shoreline cleanup on the first day of school for many years now,” said Vaillancourt.  “We focus on the streams that run in and out of the pond, nearby trails and some of the ditches. Keeping the area clean is important to the health of ecosystems, including plants and wildlife.”

Cigarettes, food wrappers, plastic bottle caps, beverage cans, packaging, plastic bags, and cups are among the most picked up items on shorelines across Canada.

“We are making a difference by taking action,” said Vaillancourt. “And it goes far beyond this cleanup. Our group, Club EARTH, is spreading the word for people to reduce their negative footprint by not only putting litter in its place, but also by reducing it altogether through recycling, choosing to drink tap water over bottled water, buying products with less packaging and more.”

Over 60 students and college employees participated in the shoreline cleanup and will continue to work with the Canadore Students’ Council (CSC) to host more events to promote environmental stewardship.
