YOUTHS RESCUED FROM ABANDONED BUILDING

At approximately 5:00 pm on September 3, 2015 the Moosonee Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report that youths were observed in abandoned buildings in town.

Officers arrived on scene and observed two males on the roof of the building. When they were ordered off the of premises it was discovered that they had been on the building for hours and had got to a point that they were unable to get themselves down. With the assistance of the Moosonee Fire Department the two youths were freed from the structure. The youths were able to get within 20 feet of the ground at which point the Fire Department used ladders to access them.

This building was previously a part of the NORAD Pine Tree Line. The building functioned as the control tower from 1967 to 1975 at which point CFS Moosonee was decommissioned.

The Moosonee OPP would like to remind the public that these buildings have not been structurally maintained since 1975 and it is a risk to any person’s safety to enter the buildings.  The Moosonee OPP have responded to reports of trespassing at the former CFS Moosonee structures four times in the previous weeks.
