Three promising projects, involving five students, are at the 2016 Canada-Wide Science Fair, being held in Montreal until May 21.

Since the regional fair, held in mid-April, the students have polished their presentations in preparation for scrutiny by some of the 230 judges in the categories of Discovery, Energy, Environment, Health, Information, Innovation, and Resources, at this national event. Numerous medals, scholarships, bursaries and cash awards are available to successful competitors.

The total award value is expected to be in excess of $500,000.

The three projects presently in Montreal are:

Gabrielle Russo of St. Luke’s Catholic Elementary School for her project “Stripping Down the Sugars” which won the Shulman Travel Award, and a gold medal in the Junior Physical Sciences category;

Ashleigh Brady and Reagan Lawton of Widdifield Secondary School for their project “Company in the Shower” which won the Rotary Club of North Bay Award of Excellence, the University of Ottawa Scholarship Award, and a gold medal in the Senior Biotechnology category;

Riley Geisler and Caleb Charette of West Ferris Secondary School for their project “Synthetic 3D Printed Heart” which won the TransCanada Award, the Lalonde Family Award in Biology and Medicine, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Biotechnology category.

NBRSF Chair, David Jackowski, said, “We had so much incredible talent at the NBRSF this year.  I'm very proud of the team of five students chosen to represent our region! Congratulations and good luck!”

The students return on May 21st, at 11:55 pm.
