Celebrity hockey comes to North Bay

On Friday, October 21 hockey fans in North Bay will have the opportunity to skate with NHL greats in the 2016 like in the city’s 1st annual Celebrity Hockey Classic. The tournament will feature celebrities like Al Iafrate, Mike Krushelnyski, Tom Fergus and Rick Nattress, with more to be added as the tournament gets closer.

The Celebrity Hockey Classic is a tournament where everyday hockey enthusiasts team up with former NHL greats to play hockey in support of Easter Seals Ontario. The evening before the tournament participants and alumni gather at a private Draft Party where teams select an NHL alumni to play on their team. Draft positions are determined by the total dollars raised by each team. After an evening spent getting to know their celebrity teammate, teams hit the ice the next day for a guaranteed minimum 2 games.

An All-Star game ends the tournament with the top individual fundraisers from each team taking on the Celebrity All-Star Team in a thrilling game of hockey. Other Celebrity Hockey Classic tournaments taking place this year feature Eric Lindros in Whitby, Paul Coffey in Vaughan, Brad May in Halton, Rick Vaive in Waterloo, an event in Huron-Bruce and another new event in Cornwall.

Each team must pay a registration fee of $1,500 per team or $100 per player (non-refundable/non-receiptable) plus a minimum of $300 per player in fundraising in order to qualify to play in the tournament.

Funds will help kids in Ontario with physical disabilities live more independently within their communities.

For the past 93 years, Easter Seals has been providing support for children and youth with physical disabilities with programs including financial assistance to help purchase mobility equipment and communication devices, as well as fully accessible summer camp opportunities at its two properties, Camp Merrywood and Camp Woodeden.
