(NORTH BAY, ONT.) – Classes start next Tuesday at Canadore College, and nearly 300 students have begun making their new home in residence this week.

Residence is hosting an early orientation week for learners, filled with information sessions for parents, healthy living and budgeting workshops, cooking classes, community and campus tours, as well as physical activities like Zumba and yoga. Another 300 students will be moving into residence on the Labour Day long weekend.

This week, the College is also hosting its Summer Transition program. The schedule is designed to help students with identified learning disabilities ease anxieties and support a positive transition into college life for greater academic and personal success.

“Having these students on campus a week early gives us a glimpse at the excitement and enthusiasm our students feel for Canadore. Our team does an amazing job at creating a student experience like no other, and I look forward to seeing our students in action in the year ahead,” said George Burton, President and CEO of Canadore College.

“Our main focus in the first weeks of school is to make sure that our students are comfortable and confident in their new surroundings. Obviously that means making sure they know how to get to their classes and where to buy their books, but it also means helping them to make new connections with their fellow students, professors, staff and the greater community.”

Canadore Students’ Council (CSC) has planned the biggest student-driven frosh week and orientation in more than 10 years. Over 300 students have signed up for activities like an outdoor concert, destination races, muddy Olympics, the annual Shinerama fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis and more. More than 100 student activities are also planned for the next four months.

Canadore is expecting another year of enrolment growth as well. With a strong student recruitment strategy and a robust college-wide student retention action plan, the College anticipates approximately 2 per cent more students for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Classes begin on September 8 and students are relocating to North Bay to study at Canadore from nearly 400 communities across Canada and 15 countries around the globe. Out-of-towners account for nearly 60 per cent of the College’s student body, and along with their local counterparts, they pump close to $290 million into the region’s economy every year.
