Bike riding grocery thief arrested in West Nipissing

A 32 year old female has been charged with Robbery after a call was received from a store located on Front St.  On July 8th, police attended the store and was told that a shoplifter was observed and when confronted, she assaulted the employee in order to leave the store.  A description of the suspect was given to police.  The suspect was soon located on Railway St riding her bicycle where she was arrested and taken into custody.  The accused was kept in custody and brought to bail court.

Two different fraud complaints were received within a few days of each other but had a similar look to them.  Both victims told police that they applied for a loan through an add that was advertised locally.  The company asked them to send money to secure the loan and then they would be getting the money they had originally applied for.  Both never received any money promised to them.  Police are advising anyone who is interested in applying for a loan, to do it through a reputable financial company.

On July 3rd, the owner of a restaurant located on Front St contacted police after he noticed some graffiti on the North side wall of the building.   Surveillance footage showed 2 youths in that area of the building.  Police are still investigating in an attempt to identify the two suspects.

On July 4th, a complaint was received from a Salter St resident of a theft from his vehicle.  The complainant told police that sometime overnight someone entered his unlocked vehicle and took CD’s, a cell phone and approx. $10-15 worth of change.  He located the CD’s and cell phone in a ditch near his house.  There are no suspects at this time.

On July 5th, police received a theft complaint from a retirement home resident stating that there was money missing from her apartment.  Police attended and was told that approx. $200 worth of money was stolen out of a locked box which was in a locked drawer located in the bedroom.  The metal box that contained the money was located and seized by police for further investigation.  There are no suspects identified at this time.

The owner of a pick up truck called police to report mischief done to her vehicle.  On July 6th, the owner parked her vehicle on Holditch St and upon her return she noticed that someone had scratched it possibly using a key.  There are no suspects at this time.

On July 7th, an elderly Ethel St resident called police regarding a scam.  Police attended and was told that the caller told her that she had an arrest warrant out for her arrest and that she would need to pay a lawyer if she wanted it dealt with.  The complainant was very suspicious of this and did not give any personal/financial information to the caller. 

On July 7th, a theft complaint was received from a grocery store located on Hwy 17 in Sturgeon Falls.  The owner of the store stated that he observed a female steal food.  This was the second time the owner caught her stealing.  The first time was the week before but when confronted, she gave back the items. This time, police were given a description of the suspect.  She was quickly apprehended and arrested for Theft.  The accused was queried which revealed that she was on 2 different court orders.  The 50 year old North Bay resident was later charged with 2 counts of Theft Under $5000, Obstruct Police, Breach of Recognizance and Breach of Probation.  She was kept in custody and later brought to bail court.

During the week of July 3rd to July 9th, the West Nipissing Police Service received 178 calls for service.  Among those were  23 Police Assistance calls, 16 9-1-1, 6 Noise Complaints, 5 Animal Complaints, 5 Alarms, 4 Thefts, 2 Frauds, 2 Mischiefs, 1 Robbery and 1 Domestic Dispute.
