'Belligerent and combative' man charged with assaulting police officer

An "altercation" with the OPP has resulted in some serious charges against a Chamberlain Township man.

On May 16, shortly after 6:30 a.m. Temiskaming OPP officers were called to a disturbance at a house on Chamberlain Road 2 in the Township of Chamberlain, near Englehart.

Investigation showed that a victim had been assaulted with a weapon and the attacker then began striking things outside the residence and fled the scene on foot prior to police arrival.

The OPP Canine Unit arrived to help to find the suspect.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m the next morning. officers got a call about someone asleep on a neighbouring property. The man was recognized by officers, arrested and taken to hospital by Temiskaming Emergency Medical Services as a precautionary measure. 

Once in police custody, the man immediately became belligerent and combative, refusing to comply with officers. 

"An altercation ensued, resulting in an officer being assaulted," says a police release.

Mark Allen, 52, of Chamberlain Township is charged with:

  • Assault causing bodily harm - choke, suffocate or strangle,
  • Two counts of assault with a weapon, 
  • Two counts of uttering threats - cause death or bodily harm, 
  • Mischief under $5,000, 
  • Breach of a conditional sentence,
  • Assault a peace officer

Allen was held for a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date in the City of Temiskaming Shores.
