 PROTECTING YOUR PROPERTY FROM BREAK AND ENTERS

(ALMAGUIN HIGHLANDS, ON) – It is important to keep your home secure when you are gone for the day or away on holidays.  One of the best ways to keep someone out of your home is to make you home looked “lived in”.  Some precautions that can be done to give your home or cottage that lived in appearance are;
• Have a neighbour or friend pick up your mail
• Make sure someone is shoveling your driveway after it snows
• In the summer months, make sure your lawn is maintained
• Make sure lights are on inside and outside the residence
Doors, frames and locks are an important part of home security.  A good solid door improves your chances of keeping someone out.

A deadbolt lock is also an important step in keeping people out.  A deadbolt should be placed on all access doors and should be;
• Pick-resistant
• Drill-resistant
• Saw-resistant
• Twist-resistant
• A minimum of 2.5 centimeters long when in the lock position
Deadbolt locks that require a key from both sides are not recommended, they do not allow for a quick exit in the event of a fire.

Alarm systems always help, but remember the best defense is a little bit of everything, stronger doors, deadbolts, stronger frames and a home that looks lived in.
