AUTOMATED LICENCE PLATE RECOGNITION TURNS UP SUSPENDED DRIVERS

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – Members at the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have a cruiser that is equipped with an Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR).  The ALPR identifies suspended/unlicenced drivers, stolen vehicles, wanted registered owners, unlicensed drivers and expired/stolen plates. 

On March 23, 2015, at 10:29 a.m. the ALPR detected the owner of a blue car was a suspended driver. A traffic stop was conducted on River Street in Parry Sound and the officer determined that the owner was the driver and is currently under suspension in the Province of Ontario. The driver, Stephen GILBERT, 38 years old from The Archipelago Township was charged with Driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on April 21, 2015.

On March 23, 2015, at 2:51 p.m. the ALPR detected the owner of a black car was a suspended driver. A traffic stop was conducted on Seguin Street in Parry Sound and the officer determined that the owner was the driver. Keith SAVILLE, 75 years old from McKellar Township was charged with:

1.    Driving while under a suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

2.    Failing to have Insurance Card contrary to the Compulsory Automotive Insurance Act (CAIA)

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on April 21, 2015.

On March 24, 2015, police were on patrol on Bowes Street in Parry Sound.  At 10:30 a.m. while operating the police cruiser equipped with the ALPR, a suspended driver was detected. A traffic stop was subsequently conducted and the investigation revealed that the driver was also the registered owner. Joanne Absolon, 55 years old from Waterloo was charged with Driving while under suspension, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Parry Sound on April 21, 2015.
