Students attending the Nipissing Homecoming Weekend are on notice this weekend...North Bay Police say they are taking a zero-tolerance approach in regards to open alcohol in the streets and noisy parties.

It's been a major problem in the past for homeowners in the Thibeault Terrace area of the city.

Chief Shawn Devine says his police service will have an increased presence in the community with more front-line officers available.

“The North Bay Police Service has worked with the student unions and administrative representatives from both post-secondary institutions on delivering the messaging of being good neighbours.

"While police want everyone to enjoy their weekend, we want students to be aware ultimately they represent the schools they attend."

Noise, partying and open alcohol was clearly apparent in past homecomings in the neighbourhood which has been nicknamed, “the Student Ghetto,” by the local residents.

The concerns also led the neighbourhood to create its own closed Facebook group about the partying problem.

The North Bay Police tell students that if they want to avoid trouble, there are the "Three R’s" of Homecoming.

Respect:

Don’t be a noisy neighbour

The Noise By-Law in North Bay states you have a 24 hours a day responsibility to avoid excessive noise and breaching this will cost you $240 for the first offence.

Be responsible

  • Parking: Parking in the wrong place not only costs you a fine but cab fare to pick up your vehicle when it has been towed away.
  • Open Liquor: We will seize your liquor and present you with a ticket totaling $140.
  • Public Intoxication: Could result in incarceration at our police headquarters and a $65 ticket.

Be Reliable

Be the friend you should be. Being a good friend includes watching that no one has put anything in your friends drink. Have fun but if someone in your group goes over the line a good friend helps them home safely.

North Bay Police non-emergency number is 705-472-1234 / if it’s an Emergency – 911
