Friends of Laurier Woods
News Release

********************

The Friends of Laurier Woods, a non-profit charitable organization, will host Brian Tayler, Chief Administrative Officer of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority at its Annual General Meeting on Monday, May 9th, 6:00-9:00p.m. at the Opera Café, 1428 O’Brien Street, North Bay.

Mr. Tayler is expected to discuss the many benefits of the new purchase by The Friends of an additional 100 acres adjacent to the established Conservation Area. Laurier Woods represents an important link with the broader trail system throughout North Bay in which the Conservation Authority has played a key role in developing.

The evening will begin with a reception at 6:00p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30p.m. The Friends of Laurier Woods business meeting will run from 7:30-8:00p.m., followed by the Guest Speaker. During the business meeting the Board of Directors, consisting of 21 members, is elected to oversee the management and development of Laurier Woods for the year ahead. New members, those interested in the protection of this provincially significant wetland, are always welcome. Board members serve for a minimum one-year term and are expected to attend approximately 10 meetings a year. They may also participate on any of the committees which are established to oversee the planning and development of this 240 acre site.

Laurier Woods Conservation Area, within the heart of the City of North Bay, is owned and managed in partnership by The Friends of Laurier Woods and the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority. The Conservation Area, encompassing a provincially significant wetland, rocky outcrops and upland forest, is a sanctuary to a broad range of wetland and woodland creatures, including migrating birds. An 8 kilometer trail network spans the site offering excellent opportunities for hiking and nature appreciation. The Friends of Laurier Woods was established as a volunteer body to manage the area as a nature preserve; to establish an interpretive trail system, boardwalks, viewing platforms, and rest areas; and to promote the area for low-impact, day-use recreation such as hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, bird watching and nature appreciation.

Anyone interested in attending the Annual General Meeting or becoming a Board or Committee Member may contact Susan Christian at 705-752-2837 or [email protected].
