“It would be cool to see some young girls come out if they are interested and they want to get into skateboarding or if they are interested in getting into it."

A group of Toronto area female skateboarders supplemented with some Northern content from North Bay will be performing at the Bonfield Skate Park around 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Amber Moffatt is one of the local competitors who is part of the team called “Babes Brigade.”

The whirlwind tour will include stops in Nobleton and Gravenhurst Friday night and continue on to Bonfield on Saturday and conclude in Huntsville on Sunday.

The goal is to create exposure for female skateboarding in Ontario.

“There’s some really talented girls,” Moffatt said noting that she was a national female skateboard champion more than a decade ago when she was 16.

“It would be cool to see some young girls come out if they are interested and they want to get into skateboarding or if they are interested in getting into it.  We aren’t there to run a skateboard clinic but we are there to be supportive while promoting female skateboarding.”

Moffatt, who has been a longtime Snowboard instructor in North Bay, says they have already received some great support for local businesses like Escape Movement, Cheap Skates, Greco’s Pizza, Creative Dance and Scratch E. Wear.

Moffatt says the sport is picking up momentum as Skateboarding will become an official Olympic event in 2020.
