People who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired will have an improved ability to get fire and police help in West Nipissing.

The Emergency Services’ Communications Centre is now equipped to receive emergency calls for service via text with 911 (T9-1-1).

T9-1-1 enables emergency communication with dispatchers through our 9-1-1 call taking centre at Northern 9-1-1 via text message.  In order to use T9-1-1, people must register their cellphones with their wireless carrier in advance.

T9-1-1 service is not intended for use by the general public.

It alsodoes not replace TTY, which is a special communications tool which has been in operation for a number of years specifically for telecommunication with the hard of hearing. The TTY can still be used and is preferable for non-emergency situations.
