West Ferris home destroyed in morning fire (UPDATED)

Smoke could be seen as far away as Airport Hill and Callander

A home on Whitney Avenue is destroyed after a morning fire.

The call came in around 10:30 this morning. By 11:30 a.m., the fire was under control but a large portion of the roof was destroyed.

Mike Newman, Platoon Chief, says the initial call came in as a detached shed fire.

"When we arrived it was fully involved in the attic space, so preliminary, the fire seems to have started in the shed which was pretty much attached to the back of the house and burnt up into the soffits and into the attic," he said.

No word on the cause. The two homeowners and their dog were evacuated from the home safely but Newman says they were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Smoke from the morning blaze could be seen from as far away as Airport Hill and even Callander.

Whitney Avenue was closed off to traffic during the fire.  The neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution but Newman believes fire crews did an excellent job containing the blaze to the single property.

"We were successful to containing it to the attic space," said Newman.

"Obviously there is going to be damage to the house because of everything coming down into the home but primarily the fire was on the rear shed and in the attic space and the guys were able to contain it there both inside the house, obviously if burnt through the roof on the delta end but it was contained to the home," said Newman.
