“It’s our 10th Pow Wow to kick off the school year and a great celebration from the First Nation culture and introduce our non-aboriginal students to the cultural aspects of this campus that we share with Nipissing on Nipissing First Nation territory and I see we had some international students arrive, what a great way to introduce to Canada,” said Canadore President George Burton who took part in the Grand Entry and Flag Song.

Canadore and Nipissing work together on this event as the powwow is hosted by Nipissing University’s Office of Aboriginal Initiatives and Canadore College’s First Peoples’ Centre.

There are more than 650 First Nation, Inuit and Métis students enrolled in programs at Nipissing and Canadore.

“Some of our students are from remote aboriginal communities and its a way to get them to come out but it’s also to get all students across campus to come and be together and to be introduced to powwow culture and it’s a way for us to celebrate with one another the diversity of our student body and also to start the year in a good way,” said Tanya Lukin-Linklater, Nipissing University Director of the office of Aboriginal Initiatives.
