On Saturday, June 19 the Trout Creek Seniors Friendship Club members demonstrated their love of quilting with new equipment purchased as a result of a $15,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The Hon. Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing joined OTF representative Sherry Green and Powassan Mayor, Bob Young to congratulate Club members as they showcased quilts produced by youth and seniors.

“I am delighted to join the Trout Creek Seniors Friendship Club to help celebrate this Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant,” Smith said. “Quilting is a very popular craft with a long history and I am pleased to see this tradition being shared with our youth.”

In December, the Trout Creek Seniors Friendship Club received the OTF grant to purchase a quilting machine and four computerized sewing machines. The new equipment has helped seniors produce a variety of quilts have been donated to fire victims and cancer patients. Local youth were engaged in the process of learning how to sew and quilt.

“This grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has enabled the Trout Creek Seniors to enrich their sewing and quilting program. Both youth and adults are using the new sewing machines and completing their projects on the long arm quilting machine. This equipment, provided by the grant, has encouraged people of all ages to pursue the art of sewing and quilting,” said Club Special Events Chair Leslie Anne Ciglen.

The Trout Creek Friendship Seniors Club was established in 1974 and has been an affiliated club in good standing with the United Senior Citizens of Ontario. The volunteer-led Club hosts several recreational activities which include dart games, quilting and crafts, potluck suppers and movie nights.
