The Powassan Voodoos upgraded their blue line with the addition of experienced defender Mitch Wilkie, who the Voodoos acquired in a trade with the Weyburn Red Wings of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the club announced on Tuesday.

Wilkie comes from a big hockey family which includes older brother Carter Wilkie who attended the Calgary Flames rookie camp this week.

“I am excited to get going with the Voodoos,” said the 20-year-old Calgary product.

“I hope to bring experience to the back end and expect a strong mobile two way d man that is competitive. Mission is to win a championship here and I want to become a big part of that. “

The 6’1” right hand shooting defender netted 2 assists in 23 games with the Red Wings last season.

Peter Goulet, Voodoos head coach and VP of hockey operations, likes what Wilkie brings to his team.

“We are super excited to add veteran blue liner Mitchell Wilkie from the Weyburn Red Wings,” said Goulet.

“He will be a great addition for our team as Mitch is capable of playing in all situations, Mitch adds size and leadership to our team.”

Voodoos fans will get their first look at Wilkie and newly acquired forward Jack Kelly this Wednesday night as the Voodoos face the much improved Espanola Paper Kings. Puck drop is 7 p.m. at the Powassan Sportsplex.
