On March 8th, 2005 the North Bay & District Humane Society operating as an agent for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals commenced an investigation into a dog being poisoned after receiving an anonymous call from a Verner resident.

Subsequent to this complaint an investigation took place involving the execution of a search warrant. During the investigation the accused admitted to placing out hamburger mixed with antifreeze.

Eric Daoust was charged under Criminal Code 445(b) - placing poison in such a position that it may easily be consumed by animals and 446(1) - wilfully causing pain, suffering or injury to an animal and appeared for trial in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay on March 30th.

He pleaded guilty and received a $400.00 fine, 2 years probation and 2 years prohibition from owning animals.
