It was all smiles, and why not. Members of the community, benefactors and fundraisers joined with United Way staff at Canarino Nissan Friday to celebrate the successful end of the United Way’s three year fundraising goal.

Not only did the campaign meet its goal, it smashed through it.

Dr. Catherine Whiting, who chaired the campaign, says she was thrilled when the final numbers came in, showing 465 thousand dollars raised in the area for United Way, far more than the 400 thousand dollars the group hoped for.

“It’s just amazing how the corporations, the employees, the individuals, the citizens the companies that raised money for United Way. Because they know it goes to services that are needed in our community. We’ve actually been able to support new services in our community. I’m quite excited.”

The United Way’s Ciara Deschamps, says the campaign’s money is crucial, but the chance to talk with so many companies and individuals over the past three years, and explain United Way’s goals, was priceless.

“Being out in the community helps our profile in the community and it tells the Nipissing District that we are committed to our community, we’re committed to the individuals in our community and committed to make our district a bright place.”

This year, the United was able to sponsor eight organizations: The AIDS Committee of North Bay and Area, Canadian Red Cross, the Elizabeth Fry Society, Learning Disabilities Association, LIPI, NADY, PADDLE and St. John Ambulance.

That would not be possible without the support of entire companies, corporations, OPP detachments and the 22 Wing, all of whom were on hand to celebrate.

In fact, more than three dozen companies were involved in workplace campaigns in 2015.

More importantly, says Whiting, the fundraising allows United Way North Bay Nipissing to keep helping.

“It also ensures sustainability because in order to keep it up, you know, we have the support of the Sudbury Office, but it’s also important to ensure we’re also sustainable in Nipissing.”

Which means more potential help for those non-profits and charities who need it.
