Each year, Workplace Safety North (WSN) recognizes Ontario workplaces with a strong safety culture.

This year features three North Bay companies, Redpath and Nordic Minesteel Technologies Inc. and Cementation.

“The award winners are positive role models and deserve special recognition,” says Paul Andre, WSN Acting President. “By making health and safety a priority in the workplace, it sends a message to employees, customers, and the community in general, that a company is proactive and a business leader. The Workplace Excellence Awards shine a spotlight on the health and safety achievements of association member firms in mining, forestry, and paper, printing and converting businesses, as well as small businesses in northern Ontario with fewer than 50 employees. This year, WSN also introduced a new award category, Northern Ontario Business, for companies located in northern Ontario, regardless of industry sector.

All Workplace Excellence Award submissions are considered for the President’s Award, and scoring is based on self-assessment as well as statistical performance over the past two calendar years. Top scoring firms were officially presented with the President’s Award at the WSN annual general meeting on September 27 in North Bay.

Earlier this year, 25 companies received a Workplace Excellence Award, recognizing workplace excellence in health and safety.

The purpose of the Workplace Excellence (WE) Awards is twofold.  First, companies complete an easy-to-follow assessment of their current health and safety programs, which enables them to identify areas for improvement and create an action plan. Second, the program provides external recognition to those companies actively engaged in improving health and safety performance.
