CN says the last of the burning rail cars from Saturday’s derailment were extinguished last night and two cars were removed from the river.

CN says specialized crews put out the last of the fires at 6 p.m.

“Air and water quality monitoring activities are continuing, as repair and remediation programs are planned and implemented,” CN said via Twitter last night.

The rail line could be back in service as soon as later today as engineering crews focus their efforts on creating a bypass line, CN says.

Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada were dispatched to the scene about three kilometres from Gogama after a CN train carrying crude oil from Alberta derailed, catching fire and sending five cars into the Mattagami River system.

The derailment and fire, the second to strike the area in less than a month, has raised environmental and safety concerns.
