Today is Doctor's Day

It marks the birthday of the first female physician in Canada

Today is Doctors’ Day in Ontario.

Every day, Ontario doctors treat over 300,0000 patients.

Doctors’ Day in Ontario began in 2011 after the Ontario Legislature passed a motion to formally recognize the work and contribution of physicians. May 1 was chosen to celebrate Doctors’ Day because it marks the birthday of the first female physician in Canada, Dr. Emily Stowe, born in 1831 in Norwich, Ont.

She applied to the Toronto School of Medicine in 1865 but was denied.

Stowe was told by its Vice Principal, "The doors of the University are not open to women and I trust they never will be."
