Timmins fire crews battle cold and flames at historic Empire Hotel Complex

Water pumps froze, slowing crews down overnight

Fire crews are still on scene of a blaze at the 100 year old Empire Complex in Timmins.

Flames could still be seen coming from the roof on Sunday morning.

Teams from Mountjoy, Schumacher, and Timmins Fire Departments have been working at the building since Saturday afternoon.

Timmins Fire Department Chief Berny Stansa said that cold weather has hampered efforts to extinguish the fire.

"We had our truck there all night, but they froze," he said. "So at six in the morning, we had to dismantle them and bring them to the shops to thaw out."

Stansa said the building could be structurally compromised, making fighting the fire more difficult.

"We can't get in to do any firefighting interior-wise," he said.

Officials have said more than 100 residents were displaced by the fire at the historic Empire Complex on the corner of Spruce Street and Algonquin Boulevard. The landmark first opened its doors in 1928.

Mayor Michelle Boileau released the following statement Saturday night:

On behalf of Timmins City Council, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the residents of the Empire Complex who have lost their homes and their cherished possessions as a result of this devastating fire.

The Empire Complex, a significant part of our city's heritage, was not just a building but a home to many individuals and families within our community. To those who have been displaced, please know that the City of Timmins stands with you during this difficult time. We are committed to providing the support necessary to help you rebuild and recover.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the emergency response teams, including our local firefighters, paramedics, and partners, who responded to the scene. Your dedication, professionalism, and selflessness in the face of adversity are commendable, and we are immensely grateful for your efforts.

The residents of Timmins have always shown their strength and unity in challenging times. Let us extend a helping hand to our neighbours in need and demonstrate the resilience and strength that defines our city.

Once again, on behalf of the City of Timmins, I extend my deepest sympathies to all those impacted by the fire at the Empire Complex.

Michelle Boileau
Mayor
