MAKE SURE YOU GET CAUGHT… WEARING YOUR LIFE JACKET!
Community Partnerships Promote Safe Boating

The, Noëlville/Warren/Killarney Detachments, Sudbury/Espanola Detachments, North Bay Detachment along with the OPP Northeast Region Traffic and Marine Unit, the Sudbury & District Health Unit, Idyltyme Sports, Steel Industrial Supplies Inc., the Municipality of Killarney, and the Municipality of the French River are working together to promote a boating safety initiative on area waterways.

The initiative is designed to encourage boaters, and in particular children, to actually wear their lifejackets. Officers use positive reinforcement and promote boating safety while patrolling area waterways. Marine officers, who observe kids wearing their lifejackets, will reward them with a bright red t-shirt that proudly states: “I GOT CAUGHT wearing my LIFEJACKET”! Our sponsors’ logos are also featured on the back.

Thanks to the generosity of our community partners (listed above), T-shirts are now being distributed and sported by children in Sudbury, Killarney, Espanola, Noëlville/French River, and North Bay OPP areas. Marine officers take the opportunity to positively interact with young boaters and encourage them to boat smart and always wear their lifejacket; it could save their life when the unexpected happens.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children. Teach your children to swim safely and follow these safe practices:

A lifejacket/PFD (Personal Flotation Device) can save a life!

Kids: always wear a lifejacket/PFD when in, on or around water.

Adults, too! Set an example... wear your lifejacket/PFD.
Always wear a lifejacket/PFD that fits snugly. Follow weight and chest measurement guidelines on the label for both children and adults.

Attach a whistle to your lifejacket/PFD.
