The IODE thinks Merv is a good citizen

Recently Cst. Merv Shantz of the North Bay City Police received the "Good Citizen Award" from the IODE (Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire) for volunteer service in the community. Each year the IODE selects an officer who has served as a volunteer within the community.

Cst Shantz has been involved locally by volunteering at coaching soccer and hockey, and has sat on the local MADD Committee, as well as the organizing committee for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. Cst Shantz has also volunteered at Lakeshore Missionary Church by sitting on various committees and working with the Jr. youth group. Internationally the officer was part of a team that travelled to the Dream Center in Los Angeles in 2009 to feed the homeless, and will join 23 others on mission trip to Kenya in August 2011 to work in orphanages and build a church.

Mary Vassbotn of the local chapter of the IODE presented Cst Shantz with a certificate and a $100 cheque to be used for a charity of his choice. He has chosen to donate the money to the local chapter of the Torch Run For special Olympics" "Volunteering in the community and abroad gives me the opportunity to give back to society in a positive way. I can only hope that the small part that I do will in some way impact the lives of others", said Shantz
