NO MMP For Nipissing Committee
Media Release

The MMP proposal which has been put forward to the voters of Ontario is full of serious concerns and huge unanswered questions—questions which will not be answered before October 10.

We know that, if approved, the number of constituencies in Ontario will be reduced from 107 to 90. We also know that the number of MPPs will be increased from 107 to 129.
One troubling question is connected with the reduced number of constituencies. 17 ridings will disappear.

How many of those will be from Northern Ontario? We do not know. How big will the surviving ridings be? We do not know? It would be one thing if you live in Oakville riding to have the boundary moved to Burlington. It would be quite a different thing to have the boundary of Nipissing moved north to Cobalt or Cochrane or James Bay.

Those who support MMP point to New Zealand as an example of how MMP works. New Zealand has 62 constituency members in their House of Representatives as well as 51 “list” members.

If MMP is approved on October 10 we will have single member constituencies in Northern Ontario which are larger then New Zealand! How does that make sense? How does that improve democracy in Ontario.?

We currently have one of the most stable democracies in the world. Our current First Past the Post system is not perfect .It can be improved but replacing it with what is being proposed is certainly not the answer.
