The first snowfall often catches many motorists unprepared for the sudden changes in weather and driving conditions, which results in unnecessary collisions and break downs.  Getting a head start by adjusting your driving habits and “winterizing” your vehicle for the harsh winter weather ahead can go a long way in reducing collisions.  Here are a few suggestions to help motorists get prepared for winter.

  • Drive according to weather conditions, Snow means slow, If the weather conditions are severe – consider staying at home;
  • Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you;
  • Driving with your full lighting system on so that you are seen in both directions;
  • Plan on extra time for winter travel;
  • Ensure you are ready for winter by having snow tires as these provide better traction, braking and handling during frost, snow, slush and particularly under icy conditions;
  • Top up your windshield washer reservoir and keep an extra one handy;
  • Keep a fully stocked emergency kit in your vehicle just in case. Gas line antifreeze, blankets, flashlight, candles, a small shovel and a first aid kit – just to name a few items;
  • Avoid using overdrive or cruise control on slippery roads;
  • Be patient. Snowplows, Sanders and Salters may be clearing the roads;
  • Have a cell phone with you in case you break down or get stuck;
  • SLOW DOWN and WEAR your seatbelt
