Armed with trash bags and plastic gloves 25 employees of local TD Canada Trust branches, along with their family and friends, converged at Marathon Beach Tuesday night to take part in the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.

The event is taking place across the country during the week of September 15 to the 23 and Charles Elliott, manager of the Main Street branch, says it’s not just enough just to sponsor the event, it is important that he and his fellow workers participate.

“It’s important that we get out and get our hands dirty,” he says.

“And this is a good project for the TD Friends of the Environment to partner with.”

Elliot also notes that the Friends of the Environment are always looking for groups to fund.

“We have funded $250,000 in North Bay since its inception,” he explains.

“And we encourage everyone to drop by any branch to check out the project or go to www.fef.ca for more information.”

He also says that the Friends of the Environment project mandate focuses on education.

“We need to create awareness for kids to learn how important the environment is.”

TD Friends of the Environment has been the main sponsor of the event since 2002 and this year over 49,000 people have registered to clean up over 1,100 sites across the country.

Last year over 722,000 pieces of litter where picked up and officials expect that there will be a number of sites cleaned up by various groups in the North Bay area.
