Summer in the Park finishes in the black...with a tidy profit.

"It's catching lightning in a bottle, it really is."

This year's Summer in the Park was so successful it will turn a profit of between 20 and $30,000.

"We don't have the final number yet," said Chairman John Strang. "We're still waiting on a couple of invoices and a couple of tweaks but we are in the black. What the final number will be I'll have in the next week."

Strang and his committee will make its final report to council in the next couple of weeks.

"It was successful. It will be successful next year and I'm looking forward to actually watching the show next year."

Strang has announced he will be stepping down from the committee after three years as its chair to spend more time on his business.

He says he still doesn't know if there is a secret of success to putting on a summer festival that satisfies the audience and the box office.

"We had a lot of luck. We had great weather and an attractive price point and trending artists that we were able to secure at a great price. I don't believe there is a magic formula. I think the committee really has to look at the economics in the area and determine the price point early and get the acts as soon as they can. It's a hard job.

"Last year we were lucky catching Hedley because Hedley saved our festival last year. It's catching lightning in a bottle, it really is."

City representative on the committee Derek Shogren says part of the plan is setting a realistic budget.

"All targets were achieved from sponsorship numbers to midway and vendor revenue and wristband sales exceeded budget. All expense lines were in line and under budget. We achieved this with no provincial or federal money this year but hope to be successful this year with grant applications given the success of last year's event."

Shogren estimates the profit to be around $30,000.

He says committee members are now looking to how to improve on next year's event.

"We appreciate everything John did for festival the last couple of years and although you can't replace his dedication we still have a good core of experience on the committee moving forward and have already started preliminary budget and planning for this year. The weather was perfect this year, the crowds were fantastic, it was a safe event and ended with a surplus. The volunteer committee gave up hundreds of hours of their time to put this festival on and the community responded in a positive way and it drew in people from all over to showcase our city. That's what it's all about."
