Summer hours sum up Relay

This year’s Relay For Life event will find its hours compressed into a more family-friendly format.

This year’s Relay For Life event will find its hours compressed into a more family-friendly format.

Gil Pharand, manager of the Canadian Cancer Society’s North Bay and District community office, announced that the Relay will still include many of the enjoyable aspects but unlike last year, this event will be packed into a six-hour evening.

To welcome more families, this summer’s Relay For Life will take place on June 12 from 6 p.m. to midnight.

“We are excited to evolve and strengthen our signature fundraiser in order to raise more money for our important mission work,” Pharand stated.

Participants are welcome to fly solo for the event or sign up as teams consisting of friends, relatives or coworkers.

While all donations are welcome, the Society encourages everyone to set a minimum fundraising goal of $150.  They also provide motivational participant coaching for anyone who registers.

Participants are also encouraged to set a distance goal (eg. 10km) for themselves or their team.  Volunteer walk leaders will be heading pre-event training walk sessions for those interested.

This year’s Relay once again takes place at the Canadian Forces Base in Hornell Heights.

The goal for the June event is $254,000.

Here it is March and already one per cent of that amount has been donated for the cause according to the website.

The top fundraising team for 2014 was Amberly’s Army, which raised over $13,000.

• In 2014, Canadians participating in the Relay raised over $40-million for cancer research and support programs.

• Each participant raised close to $300.

• Each registered team brought in an average of over $2,000.

Relay For Life is celebrating its 16th anniversary in Ontario this year.  In North Bay alone, local residents have raised more than $3-million over the course of 14 years to fight back against cancer.

These funds are used to finance life-saving research and provide support services for local patients.
