News Release

***********************

The Ministry of Natural Resource would like to remind the public of the following

· Sturgeon River is part of Division #27 (Lake Nipissing), up to the Dam in Sturgeon Falls and is therefore closed to ALL angling from March 15th to the 3 rd Saturday in May, being the 19th of May this year;

· The MNR receives numerous complaints of angling below the dam and much time is taken up by Conservation Officers responding to these complaints, and other important spawning areas therefore do not get the required attention;

· Conservation Officers will be stepping up enforcement in this area with a zero tolerance policy, and will be seizing equipment and laying charges;

· The set fine for angling in a closed time is $240, plus possible forfeiture of seized equipment under the Ontario Fisheries Regulations;

· The MNR wishes to remind the public that below the dam, the property is private, and trespassing to fish could carry a supplementary fine of $125 under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, if circumstances warrant it;

· If you have any information on this misuse of a public resource or to report a natural resource violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll free any time or contact your local ministry office during regular business hours. You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477);
