A new generation of researchers will be showcasing their work at Nipissing University March 27 and 28 as the university hosts the second annual Undergraduate Research Conference.

Nipissing students will discuss their academic research through poster presentations, grouped paper presentations and panel presentations. The conference celebrates the significant contributions the students’ work makes to their academic field of study. It also highlights the opportunities to perform high-level research that exist for undergraduate students at Nipissing University.

Nipissing professor Dr. Dean Bavington, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Environmental History, will give the keynote address on Friday night at 7:15 p.m. in the Vittorio Fedeli Business Centre (room F210).

Saturday’s events run from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in room A246 and classrooms in that vicinity. The day is organized around concurrent sessions of grouped presentations. Sessions include: Integrative Biology, Global Development, Culture and the Arts, War and Society, Social Activism, Sociology, Environmental Science, Social Responsibility, English Studies, Justice and Security, and Eco-Management.

“This is a wonderful event that enables our students to share their research with peers, as well as their professors and the community,” said Peter Ricketts, vice-president academic and research at Nipissing. “Nipissing provides significant opportunities for our students to conduct research as undergraduates. That isn’t necessarily the case at some of the larger universities where graduate students get the lion’s share of the research opportunities. Participating in active research has the capacity to really engage students in a particular subject matter on a very deep level, so the rewards are great.”

The Undergraduate Research Conference is open to the public and is free of charge.
