The Waterfront and downtown streets have felt a safer this summer thanks largely to the Canadore student Ambassador program.

Since the beginning of May students, who had completed their first year of the Police Foundations program at the college, put theory to practice and volunteered to patrol the streets of the areas for the summer.

Today, program partners, North Bay Police Services, Canadore College, and the DIA hosted a thank you luncheon for the students.

Police Chief, Paul Cook, told the students that he couldn’t be more pleased with how the students preformed this summer.

“They were dealing with people from all walks of life and certainly part of their job was as ambassadors for the city of North Bay, they were almost like tour guides at times, other times they were challenged, their authority was challenged,” said Cook.

“They handled themselves very professionally.”

In their role, the students acted as an extra set of eyes and ears for the service and the chief clearly communicated, although they had the training, he did not want students engaging is potential trouble situations.

“They were faced with some challenging situations and I think especially when you consider that they’re all first year Canadore Police Foundation students they handled themselves very well.”

Manager of the DIA, Jeff Serran, said he sees the value of the program.

“Today is my sixth week on the job, and I have only had that time to work with the students, but it’s an excellent program and we need this program to continue,” said Serran.
