On Sunday, May 2nd, over five thousand family members and friends who have been impacted by a workplace tragedy, along with injury prevention organizations, labour and business leaders will gather in North Bay, and across Canada, to participate in the annual Steps for Life–Walking for Victims of Workplace Tragedy event.

WHAT: 5K Steps for Life–Walking for Victims of Workplace Tragedy event to raise awareness about the national issue of workplace injuries, illnesses and deaths.
In addition to the walk, there will be children’s activities and a family barbeque.

WHO: Kate Kennington, the widow of a worker who was killed due to a workplace tragedy, along with fellow family members and friends who have been impacted by workplace tragedies and representatives from injury prevention organizations

WHEN: Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: Thomson Park, North Bay

Why: Kate’s husband Robert Buchanan was one of the three Canadians who are killed every working day. Approximately 78,000 Ontario workers are injured seriously enough to miss work.

Kate talks about what it means to be involved in Steps for Life 2010, “Being the spokesperson for the North Bay Steps for Life event is a special privilege for me. I walk in honour of my husband who was tragically killed and I walk in honour of my two daughters who are growing up without their father. Steps for Life is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of workplace health and safety and to hopefully prevent other families from experiences the same pain and suffering.”
 
Altogether, 28 Steps for Life events will be simultaneously coordinated in eight provinces. All proceeds will support families of workplace tragedy with Threads of Life Family Support programs and services.
Threads of Life is a national charitable organization dedicated to supporting families along their journey of healing after they’ve been affected by a workplace fatality, life-altering workplace injury or occupational disease. Threads of Life provides families with one-on-one peer support, links to community resources and opportunities to promote workplace injury prevention at the grassroots level. Threads of Life currently supports over 1,200 families from across the country.
