Start your engines!

Racers drove neck-and-neck during the Inaugural Plasma Car Race in support of One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre on Wednesday afternoon at Northgate

…Or they would if the line of plasma cars had engines.

But that didn’t stop the four heats of racers from tearing through the track at break-neck speeds to with the Inaugural Plasma Car Race in support of One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre on Wednesday afternoon at Northgate.

Hosted by the North Bay & Area Insurance Brokers Association, teams of four members raced relay-style around the track in the Tower Court. Jamie Martyn, president of the Association, said he was happy to welcome teams from out of town, as well as local teams, like Tim Horton’s, One Kids Place, and even the Battalion, with Sarge leading the charge for his team.

Cheers erupted from onlookers as racers from all teams sped from the starting line and tensions rose as some racers faced spinouts on the sharp turn, or came neck-and-neck with others in hopes of getting first place. But in the end, it was one of the GUS teams, sporting their fancy custom plasma car who pulled off the win.

One Kids Place Executive Director, Denis Filiatrault said they’d for sure be doing an event like this next year, happy with how well the community supports their efforts.

“When we put these kinds of things together we’re really thinking of the children and families in the area, but it’s about having fun and bringing the community together when those times children and youth need those supports we can find them,” he said.

He said it really was a community effort, and when the North Bay & Area Insurance Brokers Association presented them with a donation, he wanted to bring awareness to the generosity of the community.

The race event will help raise funds to purchase specialized equipment for the children, youth and families served by One Kids Place, and BayToday.ca will update with the amount raised when the total has been counted. ms
